Update on Alan's 30-Day Memorial

The first memorial for Alan was held at his house on a warm but beautiful day on August 21. Rabbi Bruce Aft and Cantor Sharon Steinberg presided.

Our next event is the Big Celebration of Alan's life, marking the first 30 days since his passing, coinciding with what would have been his 49th birthday. The date is tentatively set for September 18, and the location again will be the Washington, DC metro region.

Thank you so much to everyone who has sent donations to the American Diabetes Association.

Lara is still requesting hard copies of any stories or memories or pictures people can create and donate. I expect to be scrapbooking with Alan's sisters in the coming months. If people wish to donate 3 copies of whatever they offer, the copies will be appreciated by Alan's sisters Lisa and Debbie and myself.

For those in the Indianapolis area wishing to gather with me, Lara's friend Carrie is organizing a gathering at the Universal Unitarian Church of Indianapolis (near Butler University) for Thursday August 25th.

Regarding this blog:
1) Lisa and Lara will post the developing information about memorial events here, but
2) We encourage all friends and family of Alan Wormser (aka: N5LF and Sandor Vitez) to post here as much as possible. Alan's sudden absence has awakened my desire to document everything I can before memories start to fade and lives become busy again.

Please also remember to rely on the personal networks we have established in the family, Ham Radio, Folk Dance, and SCA communities for accessing the personal information like addresses and contact phone numbers. Anyone is welcome to email me at "orange at indy dot net" as long as they can be patient for a reply.

We are grateful for the huge outpouring of support.

Many thanks,
Lara Coutinho (aka: The Honorable Lady Sophia the Orange)

Alan Wormser, N5LF September 16, 1956 - August 12, 2005

What I remember most about Alan was his passion. His passion for everything. Alan enjoyed living life to the fullest. He was active in the Amateur Radio Service. A leader and mentor in our club, Alan was always available to help with projects and classes. He was currently serving the Alexandria Radio Club as our club secretary. His experience in emergency communications stemmed from assisting during actual hurricanes and tornados while in Texas. Beyond Amateur Radio Alan was active in folk dancing and had recently taken up mediaeval fencing. He delighted in showing us his accoutrements and sharing his new found skills. Alan was also a spirited political debater. When ever our group got together we would eventually find a political topic to discuss. Alan was never one to shy away from the majority Republican group. We called him our token Democrat and could always count on him keeping us in check. Alan loved his family and would often talk about the time he spent with his nieces. Alan had also recently become engaged to a lovely lady Lara. Alan and Lara were planning a new life together. They enjoyed each other’s company and it was obvious to all how he felt.

Alan was struck down in his prime. It is seldom that we get the pleasure of knowing someone so capable of enriching our lives. I am still in shock that someone so full of life has been taken from us so soon. Alan, you will be missed by all that knew you. I trust you have found your peace.

I came to know Alan through the Alexandria Radio Club while I was dating Rich, who is now my husband. Alan had a wide variety if interests and his passion for life touch everyone who knew him.

Alan loved his family especially his nieces whom he talked about in such a way that I felt as if I knew them even though I had never met them. I remember Alan’s smile, unforgettable eyes, and his intellect all of which will remain with me. I will never forget Alan’s precious gift of friendship. Alan will live on in my heart so others will know him as I live by his example of friendship. Recently, Alan had become engaged to Lara whom I hope I will know better in the future.

Lara, I hope you will continue to be an important part of the “HAM” group here in Alexandria!

Alan was a very enthusiastic person with a great sense of fun. I remember him at fencing practice and how dedicated he was to improving his game. He was really proud and happy when he authorized rapier.

The last time I saw him was at the Pennsic Newcomer Party. We had a great time geeking about the cut and construction of various types of garb, and about how he was going to shock the heralds with the aid of "The Book that Must be Suppressed," meaning by that the infamous book on Hungarian heraldry.

We had a wonderful time and we will never forget that evening.

We will miss him.
